Samuel "Sam" Houston

Perhaps one of the most influencial and famous figures in the history of Texas , Sam Houston was a general, a president, a member of the Cherokee Nation and a well respected politician.
His political career began with help from Andrew Jackson after the War of 1812, and mainly focused on the state of Tennessee. It was not until the Mexican-American War that Houston became known for being an intregal part in the seccession of Texas from Mexican authority. After Texas's independence was gained, Houston was voted as it's first president and it's capital was created in his name.
During the Civil War, then a United States Senator, Houston refused to pledge alliegance to the Confederate States and was removed from office. He retired to Huntsville and was buried there after his death in 1863.
His tombstone reads:
A Brave Soldier. A Fearless Statesman.
A Great Orator—A Pure Patriot.
A Faithful Friend, A Loyal Citizen.
A Devoted Husband and Father.
A Consistent Christian—An Honest Man.
