Oakwood Cemetery
Located on the edge of the cemetery grounds, is a memorial plot dedicated to the Powell family. This clearing was created after the Powell's son died at the age of five during a surgery in Austin, TX. The family commissioned a bronze statue of a Comforting Christ in memory of their son, and had a few verses written upon it's base.
This statue, more popularly known as "Black Jesus" is a popular topic of discussion amongst those interested in the haunted history of Huntsville. Originally a brighter bronze color, the statue reportedly turned a blackish brown much quicker than usual, lending it the nickname "Black Jesus". People visiting the site have reported the feeling of being watched, and strange sounds coming from the woods surrounding the area. The statue is said to have actually cried tears of grief over the young Powell boys death. Also, at night, his hands, usually in an outward facing position are said to turn downward. Another strange fact that lends itself to the eerie feeling of the memorial is that the family members buried there are all facing west, as opposed to the traditional Christian burial ritual of facing east, towards Bethlehem.
While no formidable evidence has been established to prove these claims, plenty of amateur paranormal investigators have roamed the grounds and have tried various efforts (eve recordings, electromagnetic readings, divining rods, etc) to lure spirits in the area to make contact and the area continues to lure those interesting in the hauntings of Huntsville.
