Oakwood Cemetery

The above image is a depth slice of the GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) analysis conducted in Oakwood cemetery in April of 2014. While these images are not entirely descriptive on their own, they do however, allow us some idea of the nature of the objects buried in the old slave section of Oakwood cemetery. The highlighted green object is clearly man-made, given its dimensions. Depth slices give good indications of sizes and shapes of sub-surface objects but not a precise indicator of what these objects are.The GPR survey of this section of Oakwood cemetery was conducted by David Hoffpauir, with the assistance of Dr. Lila Rakoczy’s Public History class.
